జగన్నాథస్వామీ నయనపథగామీ భవతు మే |
जगन्नाथस्वामी नयनपथगामी भवतु मे ।
What a prayer and invocation!!
"Be extant wherever my vision goes!!" Poetic way of praying the Lord to grant realization so that He is "visible" everywhere!
"Bhavatu," as a mahaanubhaava pointed out many a time, conveys the meaning of prayer (request) as well as imperative. For example, when SItaa maata told Hanuma, "...duhkha-kshaya-karO bhava" She was commanding Hanuma to do something to remove Her woes. When we use the same SlOkam, we are praying Hanuma to remove our woes!
Thus, Sankara Bhagavatpaada had composed this stOtram - jagannaathaashTakam - in a way that is equally 'useful' for dvaitin way as well as advaitin, as also for the ordinary mortals as well as for jeevanmukta-s.
This is one of the heavily used invocations of the Lord by ISKCON people, after "harE raama harE raama..."
When I was in Auckland (New Zealand) on work, just as I started worrying at the paucity of vegetarian restaurants, my eyes a "Hare Krishna Restaurant" came into my vision! The board had little Krishna emptying a pot of butter! It was an ISKCON restaurant which serves only pure vegetarian food. It was in Karaghappe Road, a short walk away from my office as well as my stay. Many a lunch/brunch I had there listening to their bhajans. I had a particular liking to a bhajan starting with "jagannaatha swaami nayana patha gaamee! nayana patha gaamee bhavatu mE!!" and leading into a crescendo of a soulful chanting of "hare raama hare raama..."
One of the most memorable events of my stay was a ratha yatra (of Jagannatha Swamy) on December 20th in the Queen Street after which I went along with some good friends (whom I made in the ratha yatra!) to ISCKON Riverhead, outside Auckland.
